Ever since BBM was connected to the London riots in 2012, social media has been getting bad press. Never more so than now, as the death toll rises, has the channel of our future been highlighted as an unsafe, abusive environment in which trolls and bullies thrive.
What you hear about much less often is how social media can be used to make good things happen. Let’s change this at Social Media Week London 2013.
We will be hosting All about the Cause, an initiative to solve a problem/resolve an issue/do a good thing/help or influence people via social media.
The great thing is that we won’t know what the cause will be until the first day of SMWLDN. And we (the social community) will decide it together.
The week before SMWLDN, we’ll announce via our social media channels and dedicated All about the Cause webpage a shortlist of news relevant causes and issues.
Keep an eye out & make sure to cast your vote – remember to use #CAUSE2013.
On 23rd September at 4pm, we’ll be holding All about the Cause: Part One at AatI HQ to reveal the winning cause of our public social media vote.
At the event and remotely throughout the week, to promote our chosen #CAUSE2013 and help affect change, we will have our panel of Social Celebrity Change-Makers (TBA).
Whether we’re galvanising a workforce in response to a recent crisis – like the Twitter campaign to clean up after the London riots – or making the impossible possible for outsiders and lonely voices – like sharing a dying girl’s bucket list to reach people that can help her to achieve it – be part of All about the Cause.
All about the Cause: Part Deux will take place at 2pm on 27th September. Our Social Media Change-Makers will once again be in the room, tweeting #CAUSE2013, sharing and making things happen. There we will reveal the fruits of our labours and announce the good we have done using social media.
You will need to register to attend both events via the SMWLDN website – come along and see our Social Celebrity Change-Makers in action, follow them, follow @AATC2013 for updates, share #CAUSE2013 and let’s show the world that social media is here to do good.
If you can’t make either event, don’t worry; you can make a difference by following us on Twitter @allabouttheidea, keeping an eye on #CAUSE2013 and sharing and RTing as and when you can.
