3D printing: How it works

We first got wind of 3D printing technology a year ago.

Referred to in academic circles as Additive Layer Manufacturing, these printers aren’t actually that far removed from a 2D ink jet. Just as your average office printer produces a print out by depositing layer upon layer of ink, so does a 3D printer build a 3D model by depositing layer upon layer of material.

But 2 years down the line, we’re still excited by the technology. And so, it would seem, are Mashable, who have posted the above infographic to try and explain how it all works.

It’s such a big idea, we can’t wait to get our hands on one! What would you print out?
