Smellivision is on its way to a TV near you.
Scientists at the University of California are working with Samsung to create a tiny device for TVs and smartphones that allows users to smell what is being shown on the screen.
To be more precise: In a proof of concept paper published a fortnight ago by the journal ‘Angewandte Chemie’, the researchers demonstrate that it is possible to generate odor, at will, in a compact device small enough to fit on the back of your TV with potentially thousands of odors.
Sungho Jin, professor in the departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and NanoEngineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering (quite a mouthful), provided his professional opinion: “It is quite doable.”
At the moment, the researchers aren’t sure what sort of impact it will have on consumers. As a consumer, I can say that the impact on me will be profound. As a dieter, the result will be devastating. I already have to close my eyes when a Domino’s ad comes on, now I have to hold my nose aswell??
