This may sound like a highly dangerous, nay lethal, combination, however Scottish scientists from Edinburgh Napier University have come up with the BIG idea behind the conversion of Scotland’s favourite tipple into biobutanol, the next generation of biofuel which gives 30% more output power than ethanol.
Unlike ethanol, this innovative bio-fuel means that ordinary cars would be able to use the more powerful fuel instead of traditional petrol. And the great news is, the university plans to take the new fuel to market in a bid to make it available at the pumps.
The process uses the two main by-products of whisky production: “pot ale”, the liquid from the copper stills, and “draff”, the spent grains. As part of the research, samples of whisky distilling by-products were provided by Diageo’s Glenkinchie Distillery in Edinburgh.
I had visions of filling up the All about the Idea-mobile from a Johnnie Walker Black Label pump on the M4 but, after my distilling education, I consider the honey coloured malt, and in turn biobutanol, the future of re-fuelling.
It certainly gives a new meaning to “drink driving“.

I guess the moral of the story is to always travel with a bottle of Johnnie Walker black to hand. I wonder whether the police would buy it though?
